Satellite Stopped Competing With Terrestrial and Started Filling Its Gaps

Non-terrestrial networks became standard within a year because operators stopped asking where satellite beats terrestrial and started asking where terrestrial does not reach — questions with different answers, only one of which has an economic case.

The number that establishes how quickly this changed is a market share figure: around 70 per cent of the global telecommunications market now has at least one non-terrestrial network partnership (2:22).

Twelve months earlier, most operators that had anything had exactly one (2:12). The move from experiment to standard arrangement happened inside a year.

Why partnership rather than competition

The framing offered is that these are pragmatic partnerships letting terrestrial operators reach new customer segments and revenue models (2:35).

That word choice is doing real work. Satellite connectivity was, for most of its history, a competing answer to the same question terrestrial networks answered — and it lost, comprehensively, on cost and capacity everywhere people actually live.

What changed is that operators stopped asking where satellite beats terrestrial and started asking where terrestrial does not reach. Those are different questions with different answers, and only the second has an economic case. A satellite partnership is not a hedge against the ground network; it is a way to sell service in the places the ground network was never going to cover.

Where the value actually sits

The problem identified is specific: coverage gaps that recur weekly or monthly (12:43), and the observation that no single answer covers them.

That framing is more useful than a capability claim. The gaps are heterogeneous — maritime, remote industrial, disaster response, rural. Each has a different tolerance for latency, a different willingness to pay and a different traffic profile. A technology that addresses all of them equally would be addressing none of them well.

The connected-device case gets more attention than consumer connectivity, and reasonably so: new spectrum capabilities make the proposition more compelling (11:57). Devices reporting occasionally from places without coverage are exactly the workload satellite serves well and terrestrial serves badly — low bandwidth, high latency tolerance, and located where nobody will build a tower.

The repurposing detail

A quieter point concerns existing infrastructure being repurposed for connectivity that can be brought live quickly (32:32).

This is the practical constraint most discussions of new networks understate. The technical capability arrives long before deployment, because deployment means spectrum, sites, regulatory approval and capital. Anything that reuses infrastructure already in place compresses that timeline, and the timeline is usually what decides whether a service exists.

Which is the honest summary of where non-terrestrial networks stand. Not a replacement, not a competitor, but a set of specific gaps that terrestrial economics permanently excludes — and a year in which the industry stopped treating that as a niche and started treating it as part of the standard arrangement.
